In 1994 a small group of avid gardeners began meeting at the Bedford Public Library, Temperance Michigan. Dedicated to increasing their knowledge and sharing this knowledge with others, they formed the Bedford Flower and Garden Club. Membership was open to the public and the club grew by leaps and bounds. On June 29, 1996, the club held its first garden tour. The tour featured six beautiful, local gardens, including the garden at the library. Since then an annual garden tour has been held as the major fundraiser for the club. Proceeds are used to plan, plant and maintain the sun and shade gardens at the library, purchase garden books, contribute to various library projects and offer a scholarship to Bedford High School students. The garden club also sponsors master gardener education classes for interested members.
In addition to visiting members’ gardens, touring professional gardens and nurseries, the club holds a monthly meeting. The meetings are a combination of social time and education. Guest speakers are invited to lecture on a variety of garden topics and members provide refreshments on a rotating basis.
Our members enjoy the broadest range of gardening interests including conifers, perennials, annuals, roses, shade & sun gardens, water gardens, and even indoor plants. Sometimes, no gardens are involved just a passion for the beauty of gardens and the value of friendships made in the club.
In addition to the member benefits we offer, Bedford High School students can apply to receive a scholarship to an accredited college or university if they are seeking a degree in an earth science related program. Applications are available at Bedford High School.
